### Assumptions and included deductions

These notes apply to the last calculated result. Displayed pay-period amounts are annual averages, not payroll withholding.

- Assumes single with no dependants and appropriate private patient hospital cover all year. No Medicare levy surcharge applies; insurance premiums are not deducted.
- Includes AUD 1000.00 standard work-expense deduction; taxable income is AUD 79000.00. This allowance does not reduce gross cash pay.
- Division 293 tax on super contributions is excluded. Personal payment would reduce cash available; payment released from super reduces super savings.
- Enter cash salary excluding employer superannuation. HELP/HECS repayments and salary sacrifice are not included.
- Medicare uses the enacted $28,011 low-income threshold. A later law may retrospectively change 2026/27 thresholds; this estimate does not forecast that change.
- This is annual tax liability estimated to cents, not PAYG withholding or a tax-return assessment.

#### Who can use this estimate

- Full-year Australian tax resident employee aged 18 to 64, single with no dependants, with one ordinary cash salary and no other income.
- Appropriate private patient hospital cover for the entire year, so no Medicare levy surcharge applies.
- Standard work-expense deduction up to AUD 1,000 for the supported employee, reducing taxable income without reducing gross cash pay.
- Resident income tax, non-refundable low income tax offset (LITO), and ordinary Medicare levy with the single-person low-income reduction.
- Cash salary excludes employer superannuation. The same national income tax rules apply across states and territories.
- 2026/27 estimate using enacted tax rules and Medicare thresholds.

#### What is not included

- People without full-year appropriate hospital cover, couples, dependants, pensioners, Medicare exemptions and part-year residence.
- HELP/HECS and other study or training loan repayments.
- Salary sacrifice, employee super contributions, deductions beyond the included standard work-expense deduction, other tax offsets and private health insurance premium/rebate adjustments.
- Employer superannuation, superannuation tax including Division 293, benefits in kind, working holiday makers, foreign residents and self-employment.
- Exact PAYG withholding, refunds, benefits eligibility, and any future retrospective Medicare threshold changes.

## Understand your Australian take-home pay

Guide tax year 2026/27. The result above uses 2026/27.

Income tax and the Medicare levy decide how much of a cash salary is left. This guide explains the deductions in your result, how to read an offer that includes super and why your payslip can differ from a monthly average.

In this guide

### How to calculate your salary after tax

Enter your cash salary before tax in Australian dollars and choose its period. Use the amount excluding employer superannuation, even if your offer describes the total as a remuneration package. The calculation covers the 2026/27 financial year, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

The estimate subtracts resident income tax, after any low income tax offset, and the ordinary Medicare levy. It includes the standard work-expense deduction when working out taxable income. Your result shows annual take-home pay and monthly, weekly and fortnightly averages.

Check the calculation notes if your circumstances differ from the single, full-year employee described beside the form. Study loan repayments and salary sacrifice need a separate calculation.

### Separate cash salary from employer super

Read the wording of each offer carefully. A cash salary with super paid on top is different from a total package that already includes the employer contribution. Ask the employer to confirm the cash salary and super amounts separately before comparing two offers.

A package described as $89,600 consisting of $80,000 cash salary and $9,600 employer super should be entered here as $80,000. The super amount goes towards retirement savings; it is not part of the cash salary available for your regular bills.

Do not subtract employer super again from the take-home result. It was excluded from the salary you entered. Voluntary employee contributions and salary sacrifice can have different tax effects, so reducing the input by those amounts will not necessarily give a reliable estimate.

### How taxable income and tax brackets work

Gross salary is your pay before deductions. Taxable income is the amount used to work out income tax after eligible deductions. The standard work-expense deduction for the employee circumstances covered here reduces taxable income by up to $1,000, capped at the salary earned.

This deduction does not take $1,000 out of your pay or add $1,000 to your bank account. It reduces the income on which tax is calculated. At $80,000 gross salary, the calculator uses $79,000 taxable income. Additional work-expense claims are outside this estimate.

Resident income tax rates apply to separate slices of taxable income. The first $18,200 is tax-free. The next slice in 2026/27 up to $45,000 is taxed at 15%, followed by 30% up to $135,000, 37% up to $190,000 and 45% above that. These rates exclude Medicare.

A raise that takes you into another bracket does not put your entire salary at the higher rate. Calculate both salaries to see the extra take-home pay after income tax and Medicare.

### The deductions included in your result

Your result separates the two amounts deducted from cash salary. That makes it easier to see why your take-home pay changes when you enter a different salary.

Income tax after LITO

The low income tax offset, or LITO, reduces income tax for eligible people on lower taxable incomes. Its maximum is $700, and it reduces as income rises. It cannot reduce income tax below zero or create a payment on its own. The Medicare levy remains separate.

Ordinary Medicare levy

The usual levy is 2% of taxable income. The single-person low-income rules can reduce that amount, including to zero. The calculator applies those rules to taxable income after the included standard deduction.

Medicare levy surcharge

This is a separate charge that can apply depending on income and private hospital cover. The estimate assumes appropriate cover for the entire year, so it does not deduct a surcharge. Insurance premiums are not taken from the result either.

### Example: an $80,000 salary in Australia

This example uses an $80,000 cash salary for the whole of 2026/27, excluding employer super. The employee is aged 18 to 64, single with no dependants, and has appropriate private hospital cover all year. The employee has no other income and makes no study loan repayments or salary sacrifice contributions.

Illustrative 2026/27 salary breakdown in Australian dollars
| Salary or deduction | Annual amount |
| --- | --- |
| Gross cash salary | $80,000.00 |
| Standard work-expense deduction from taxable income | $1,000.00 |
| Taxable income | $79,000.00 |
| Income tax after LITO | $14,220.00 |
| Medicare levy | $1,580.00 |
| Estimated take-home pay | $64,200.00 |

Income tax is $4,020 on the $26,800 between $18,200 and $45,000, plus $10,200 on the remaining $34,000 of taxable income. No LITO applies at this income. Medicare is 2% of $79,000. Subtracting $14,220 and $1,580 from $80,000 leaves $64,200, averaging $5,350 a month or $1,234.62 a week.

### Why your payslip can show a different amount

Your employer withholds tax from each payment through pay as you go withholding, usually called PAYG withholding. Your payslip shows gross and net pay, along with deductions. Withholding contributes towards your annual tax bill; this calculator estimates the annual bill rather than reproducing the payroll withholding tables.

The information you provide to payroll, changes in earnings and any additional deductions can affect what reaches your bank account. Start checking a difference with the gross pay and pay period on your payslip, then look at each deduction.

Your tax return accounts for the income and deductions that apply to your actual year, together with tax already withheld. That can produce a refund or a further amount to pay. The difference between a payslip and this estimate is not, by itself, an estimate of your refund.

### Use the right pay period for your budget

Dividing the annual estimate by 26 gives a typical fortnightly average, before differences in payroll withholding.

Fortnightly pay is not the same as being paid twice a month. Check your employer’s pay dates when planning regular bills and savings transfers. A monthly average can be useful for comparing costs even when your deposits arrive on a different schedule.

Enter the salary you expect to earn over the financial year, allowing for part-time hours or unpaid leave. An advertised full-time equivalent salary needs adjusting to your paid hours before it can represent your own income.

### Compare offers using the money available to you

Calculate your current cash salary, then the proposed cash salary using the same circumstances. Subtract the annual take-home amounts and divide the difference by 12 to see the estimated monthly increase. Compare employer super separately so that a larger total package does not obscure a smaller cash salary.

Australian states and territories use the same national resident income tax rules for this salary calculation. A move can still change how much you spend on rent or transport. Put those costs alongside take-home pay when deciding what an offer means for your budget.

Use the comparison page for an overseas offer and enter a dated exchange rate to show both results in one currency. Each country has its own tax year and deductions. Allow separately for living costs before deciding how much you could save.

## Questions about salary after tax

### Does moving to another Australian state change this estimate?

The national resident income tax and Medicare rules used here are the same across Australian states and territories. Moving can change your living costs, but selecting another state would not change these salary deductions.

### Does the $1,000 standard deduction reduce my cash salary?

No. It reduces taxable income for the employee circumstances covered here, up to the amount of salary earned. You still start with your full cash salary when calculating take-home pay. Do not subtract the deduction yourself before entering your salary.

### Does private hospital cover remove the Medicare levy?

No. This estimate assumes appropriate private patient hospital cover throughout the year, which avoids the Medicare levy surcharge. The ordinary Medicare levy still applies, with a reduction at lower incomes.

### What does the low income tax offset do?

LITO reduces income tax when your taxable income qualifies. It cannot create a refund on its own or reduce the Medicare levy. The result explanation shows the amount actually used to reduce income tax.

### Are HELP repayments or tax on super included?

HELP and other study loan repayments are excluded. Superannuation tax, including Division 293, is also excluded. These can affect your finances beyond the cash-salary estimate shown here.
