About this calculation

Check which taxes and deductions are included, which circumstances the estimate covers and where the tax figures come from.

Tax year 2026

These notes apply to the last calculated result. Displayed pay-period amounts are annual averages, not payroll withholding.

  • Tax class I with zero child tax allowances. Care-insurance child counts do not set your child tax allowance.
  • Health insurance uses the announced 2.9% average additional rate. Your fund can charge a different rate.
  • The estimate uses annual wage tax and annual contribution ceilings. Monthly and weekly figures are averages. They do not calculate an exact payslip or final tax return.
  • Saxony and salaries of €24,000 or less are not covered, except zero pay as a zero-deduction example.
  • Church tax uses payroll rates only. Tax-return relief and caps are not included. Special church charges are also excluded.

Who can use this estimate

  • Full-year German resident employee aged 23 to 64, with tax class I and one regular salary paid in 12 equal parts.
  • Annual salary above €24,000, with statutory pension, unemployment, health and care insurance all year.
  • Statutory health insurance with sickness benefit and the announced 2026 average additional rate of 2.9%.
  • Zero child tax allowances (Kinderfreibeträge) in payroll records, including parents whose children no longer qualify for tax allowances.
  • All German states except Saxony; home and workplace in the same state. Parent status and eligible care-insurance child count stay the same all year.
  • Annual wage-tax estimate using the 2026 Grundtabelle and payroll insurance allowance. Zero pay returns zero salary deductions only.

What is not included

  • Saxony, cross-state work, tax classes II to VI, joint taxation, part-year residence and other income.
  • Minijobs and Midijobs: positive annual salaries of €24,000 or less are rejected.
  • Child tax allowances, Kindergeld, single-parent relief and the tax-return comparison of child benefits and allowances.
  • Private health insurance, fund-specific additional rates, pension exemptions, miners, students, trainees and civil servants.
  • Bonuses, benefits in kind, salary sacrifice, company pension schemes and personal payroll allowances.
  • Final tax-return liability, church-tax refunds or caps, special church charges and deductions for church tax paid.
  • Exact monthly or weekly payroll rounding. Insurance minimum payments without salary. Changes during the year.

Children for care insurance
Use the status that applies all year. Parent status removes the surcharge for life. The second to fifth child under 25 each reduce your rate. This estimate requires zero child tax allowances on your payslip.
Do you pay church tax?
Choose Yes if your employer deducts church tax from your pay. Membership must stay the same all year.
State for church tax
Live and work in the same state all year. Saxony is not covered because its employee care contribution is higher.

Understand your German salary after tax

Guide tax year 2026. The result above uses 2026.

Brutto is your pay before deductions. Netto is the amount left after the deductions shown. Use this guide to read the result and compare it with your job offer or payslip.

How to calculate your take-home pay

Enter your cash salary before deductions. Choose annual, monthly, weekly or hourly pay to match the amount you have. Enter your paid hours and weeks when using an hourly rate. The calculation uses the resulting annual salary.

Check your tax class and insurance cover before using the result. Tax class I and statutory insurance must apply. The salary must be paid in 12 equal parts. It does not calculate Minijob or Midijob pay. A positive annual salary of €24,000 or less is outside its range.

Choose your child status for care insurance. Select the state group that applies if you pay church tax. Read each deduction. Use the monthly average as a starting point for your budget.

A €60,000 salary example

This example uses €5,000 gross a month for 12 months in 2026. The employee is aged 23 to 64, has no children, uses tax class I and lives and works outside Saxony. Church tax does not apply. Statutory health insurance uses the announced 2.9% additional rate.

The payroll insurance allowance is €12,090. Subtract this, the €1,230 employee expense allowance and the €36 special-expense allowance from €60,000. This gives a taxable annual amount of €46,644. The Grundtabelle gives €9,389 of wage tax. The solidarity surcharge is zero at this tax amount.

Employee unemployment insurance€780.00
Employee health insurance€5,250.00
Employee care insurance€1,440.00
Estimated take-home pay€37,561.00

The monthly average is €3,130.08. Total annual deductions are €22,439.00. Your payslip can differ because it uses payroll rounding, your health fund's rate and your personal payroll records.

Wage tax and the Grundtabelle

Lohnsteuer is income tax withheld from your wages. The calculator first applies the standard payroll allowances. It then uses the 2026 Grundtabelle, the basic income tax formula for an individual.

The basic tax-free amount is €12,348 of taxable income. This is not a gross salary limit. Above it, the formula rises through two curved tax zones, followed by zones with rates of 42% and 45%. A higher rate does not apply to all your gross salary.

Tax class I is the only supported class. Use a different calculator if you qualify for class II single-parent relief or file jointly. A personal allowance recorded by the tax office also needs a different calculation.

Your social insurance deductions

These contributions reduce cash pay separately from wage tax. Only the employee share is deducted here. Employer contributions are not taken from the salary result.

The employee pension rate is 9.3% and the unemployment rate is 1.3%. Both stop increasing once annual contribution pay reaches €101,400. Health and care contributions use a lower annual ceiling of €69,750.

The health insurance estimate uses half of the 14.6% general rate plus half of the announced 2.9% additional rate. This gives an employee rate of 8.75%. The additional rate set by your health fund can differ. Private health cover is outside this estimate.

How children affect care insurance

Pflegeversicherung is long-term care insurance. The employee share outside Saxony is 2.4% for a childless employee aged 23 or over. Recognised parent status removes the childless surcharge for life, giving a base employee rate of 1.8%.

A parent’s second through fifth child under 25 each reduce the employee rate by 0.25 percentage points. The rates are 1.55% for two, 1.3% for three, 1.05% for four and 0.8% for five or more eligible children. Use the count accepted for your care insurance. This estimate requires the same status all year.

Care-insurance children and child tax allowances are different. This calculator requires zero child tax allowances in your payroll records. A parent can meet this limit when their adult children no longer qualify for tax allowances. It does not estimate family benefits.

Solidarity surcharge and church tax

The Solidaritätszuschlag is based on tax, not gross salary. The surcharge in this class I estimate is zero when the relevant annual wage tax is €20,350 or less. A relief zone above that limit restricts the charge before the full 5.5% rate applies.

Church tax applies when you belong to a community that collects it through payroll. It is 8% of the relevant wage tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, and 9% in the other covered states. Select No if church tax does not apply to you.

The estimate covers payroll church tax only. A final assessment can include relief for church tax paid, a cap or other church charges. Home and workplace must be in the same state. Saxony is excluded because its care-insurance split also differs.

Compare the result with your payslip

Find Bruttogehalt and Lohnsteuer on your payslip, then check the employee insurance deductions. RV usually marks your pension contribution, while AV marks the amount for unemployment cover. KV and PV are the health and care contributions. Check the labels on your employer's statement.

The monthly and weekly figures here divide an annual estimate into averages. Actual payroll can round each payment separately. A bonus, a change of employer or a change in family status can also change the deductions.

A tax return may produce a refund or further tax. Extra work costs, other income, church tax paid and personal relief can change the final amount. The result here estimates regular salary deductions.

Compare job offers and plan a budget

Compare offers over the same number of paid months and hours. An offer stated as €5,000 per month can mean something different if it includes a separate bonus or a thirteenth payment. Ask for the regular annual cash salary before using this calculator.

Keep employer pension payments separate from cash salary. Treat relocation support and other benefits separately too. This estimate does not calculate their tax treatment. A higher gross offer can also bring higher living or travel costs.

Start with the monthly take-home estimate. Subtract rent, utilities, transport, food and other regular costs. Set aside money for costs paid once a year. Compare what remains for savings and flexible spending, using the same assumptions for each offer.

Questions about salary after tax

It means gross-to-net calculator. Enter pay before deductions to estimate what remains after the taxes and employee insurance shown. The result is an estimate for the stated case and tax year.

This calculator supports tax class I only. It does not calculate tax class II single-parent relief or classes III to VI. Check the class on your payslip before using the result.

Only if your payroll records show zero child tax allowances. The care-insurance options cover recognised parent status and reductions for eligible children under 25. They do not add child tax allowances or Kindergeld. Parents with qualifying child tax allowances need a different estimate.

Employees in Saxony pay a higher share of care insurance than employees in other states. The rates in this calculator do not include that difference. Do not select another state to estimate pay in Saxony.

The estimate uses the announced average additional rate of 2.9% for 2026. Each health fund sets its own additional rate. Your fund's rate can change both your cash contribution and the allowance used for wage tax.

No. These jobs have special contribution rules. The calculator rejects positive annual salaries of €24,000 or less. Zero pay shows zero salary deductions, but it does not estimate any insurance payments due without employment income.

No. Church tax depends on membership of a community that collects it. The solidarity surcharge is zero below its tax-based exemption and reduced within its relief zone. The two deductions use separate rules.

No. It is one twelfth of the annual estimate. Payroll rounding, your health fund's rate, personal allowances and payments outside regular salary can change your payslip. A final tax assessment can also differ.
