Your guide to salary after tax in Spain

Guide tax year 2026. The result above uses 2026.

Use your annual salary and pay schedule to plan your budget for 2026. Your tax region also affects the result. The guide explains the deductions in the calculator and how to read its results.

How to calculate salario neto

Enter your gross cash salary before deductions. Choose annual pay if the offer gives a yearly total. Include regular extra salary payments in that total, then choose Madrid, Catalonia or Andalusia as your tax residence.

The calculator removes employee Social Security contributions first. It then uses the general work expense and earned-income reduction to find the income taxed under IRPF. State and regional tax are calculated separately. Relief for the personal minimum and the work-income credit then reduce the tax due.

A €30,000 salary in Madrid

This example uses one single employee aged 18 to 64 in contribution group 7, with a permanent full-time job. Annual contribution pay is spread equally across 12 months. There are no dependants, pension payments, other income or regional spending credits.

Employee contributions are €1,950. The general work expense removes another €2,000 from taxable income. The earned-income reduction is zero at this salary, so the tax base is €26,050. State tax after minimum relief is €2,463. Regional tax after minimum relief is €2,135.01.

Why your region changes IRPF

IRPF is Spain’s personal income tax. Salary is taxed in bands. Only income within a higher band receives that higher rate. Your whole salary does not move to the new rate when it crosses a threshold.

The state scale is combined with the scale for your tax region. Each supported region has its own bands. Madrid and Andalusia also use different regional personal minima. Select where you are tax resident, which may differ from the location of your employer.

What the personal minimum does

The personal minimum gives relief for basic living costs. The state calculation uses €5,550 in this example. The calculator works out tax on the income base and subtracts tax on the minimum.

This is why you should not remove the minimum from your gross salary before entering it. The calculator applies the relief separately under each scale. Age, dependants and disability can change this relief, so those cases need a different calculation.

Employee Social Security and the ceiling

Social Security is a separate deduction from IRPF. The employee in this permanent job pays for common contingencies, unemployment, vocational training and the Intergenerational Equity Mechanism, known as MEI.

The normal rates total 6.50% in 2026. They apply to a monthly contribution base with a lower limit and an upper limit. Group 7 uses €1,424.40 and €5,101.20. The calculator includes regular extra pay in the monthly base.

Pay above the normal ceiling still has an employee solidarity contribution. This has three small rates on successive parts of the excess. The employer’s own contributions are not removed from your salary.

Work expenses and relief at lower salaries

The €2,000 general work expense reduces taxable work income. It is not a cash payment taken from your bank account. You do not need to subtract it from the salary input.

The earned-income reduction gives further relief at lower incomes. Its income test uses salary after employee contributions, before the general €2,000 expense. A separate 2026 work-income tax credit can reduce IRPF at low gross salaries. Both reliefs are calculated automatically for the stated case with no other income.

How your pay schedule affects each payslip

Check whether an offer states annual pay or the amount of each payment. A salary of €2,000 paid 14 times gives €28,000 gross per year. Enter €28,000 as annual salary for that offer. Entering €2,000 as monthly salary would instead use €24,000 a year.

The monthly result divides estimated annual net pay by 12. It helps you compare annual offers, but it is not the amount of each payment under a 14-payment schedule. Extra payments and the way tax is withheld can change the cash received in a particular month.

Compare offers and plan a budget

Use the same annual basis for both offers. Select the correct tax region for each offer. Compare annual net pay and the average monthly amount. Use Catalonia if you are tax resident in Catalonia, including Barcelona. Use Andalusia if you are tax resident in Andalusia.

From the monthly estimate, allow for rent, bills, travel, food and saving. Keep relocation costs separate from regular spending. Check the pay schedule before you use the average to plan payments due each month.

Compare pension arrangements and noncash benefits separately. This calculator does not value those benefits or deduct your pension payments. A higher gross offer can leave a different amount after tax and personal costs.

Why the result can differ from payroll

An employer withholds IRPF during the year. This estimate calculates annual tax using the stated personal facts and the selected regional scale. It does not reproduce the employer’s withholding method.

Other income and tax relief can change your final tax return. This result also does not decide whether you must file a return. Check the calculation limits before you compare the estimate with a payslip or a tax assessment.

Questions about salary after tax

Salario bruto is pay before tax and employee deductions. Salario neto is the amount left after them. Enter gross cash salary in the calculator so that the deductions are applied once.

No. Their tax systems are outside this calculator. Other regions marked unavailable are also excluded. Do not choose Madrid as a substitute for a region where you are tax resident.

No. It uses ordinary resident IRPF. The special regime for certain people who move to Spain has different rules and needs a separate calculation.

Enter the full annual cash amount, including regular extra payments, as annual pay. A salary of €2,000 paid 14 times is €28,000 a year. The monthly net result is an annual average divided by 12.

The contribution group can change the minimum Social Security base. This calculator covers group 7 administrative assistants only. Check your group on your payslip before you use the estimate.

Personal pension payments and regional credits for qualifying spending are excluded. The calculation includes the general work expense, earned-income reduction, personal minimum and applicable work-income credit for the stated case.

No. The contribution rules here assume a full-time job for the full year. Positive annual salaries below €17,094 are rejected. Zero is available only as a no-employment comparison with no deductions.

No. It is one twelfth of estimated annual net pay. Extra payments can change the amount received each month. Payroll withholding can also change during the year.
